Ukraine, is a sovereign state in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the east and northeast. A fully independent Ukraine emerged only late in the 20th century. Historically, Ukraine had large Jewish and Polish populations, particularly in the Right Bank region (west of the Dnieper River). The capital Kiev was given Hero City status by the Soviet Union following its resistance to the Nazis in the Battle of Kiev in 1941. Today the capital of Ukraine has changed cardinally.



Since Ukraine is geographically located between Europe and Asia, much of its culture exhibits both Eastern and Western influences; additionally, it’s richly embedded in ancient traditions. Ukraine is famous for its tradition of the Easter egg. Christian interpretations of this practice abound, many Ukrainians still believe that the egg has immense power and releases the earth from the restraints of winter.

As one of the largest crossroads in Europe, Ukraine has a diverse array of spoken languages. Of course, Ukraine’s official language is Ukrainian, which is spoken by roughly 67 percent of the population and its moreover like Russian. Foreign students may find the language incredibly difficult to understand or learn, but in the Educational Institute medium of instruction is strictly English for entire course.
